Protecting the Environment

15 August 2023 marks China’s inaugural National Ecology Day. Towngas Smart Energy strives to promote clean energy and environmental protection through multiple means and measures, and actively respond to the country's call for ecological civilisation construction.

Biodiversity Conservation

As early as last year, Towngas Smart Energy – along with our parent company, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) – became the first Hong Kong company to publish a directive document in response to the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) beta framework. The Climate-related and Nature-related Directive Guide reviews and discloses the ecological and biodiversity impacts, as well as the risks and opportunities, arising from the operations of Towngas and Towngas Smart Energy. This demonstrates our commitment to sustainable development.

Whether in the project planning phase or during construction, the Company avoids areas rich in biodiversity and carries out site-specific Environmental Impact assessments according to local government requirements. Innovative technologies as well as preventive and corrective measures are in place to minimise the impact on wildlife and the ecosystem.

Furthermore, in the past year, Towngas Smart Energy held multiple large-scale events to encourage our employees to embrace a low-carbon lifestyle, such as opting for cycling as a means of transport, participating in tree planting initiatives and joining Earth Hour. These activities fostered greater environmental consciousness in our staff, thereby contributed to the preservation of the ecological balance and rich biodiversity. The Company also launched the “Blue Carbon Protection” campaign, with volunteers brought together to help clear invasive plant species at Shenzhen’s Futian Mangrove Ecological Park, aiming to preserve the ecological balance of the mangrove wetlands.

Environmental Management Focus

Towngas Smart Energy has established a specialised division for environmental protection which is responsible for formulating management policies and systems, drafting the Staff Handbook on Safety and Environmental Protection and conducting supervisory checks on the Company's environmental management. It identifies and assesses key environmental factors pertaining to the Company's scope of businesses across various aspects, including resource and energy utilisations, exhaust gas emissions, effluent discharge, discharge on soil, energy release and generation of waste.

The Company abides by relevant environmental laws and regularly reviews and updates its environmental policies. It has referred to relevant laws and principles set out by state authorities and provisioned specific clauses on conservation of resources and energy. In addition, it has set energy efficiency benchmarks and launched site inspections on energy conservation efforts as well as established specific requirements on the energy efficiency of production facilities, buildings and offices and transportation and logistics, among other areas.

Advocating a Low-Carbon Lifestyle

The Company mandates its project companies to formulate energy saving measures that gradually reduce energy consumption and emissions. Project companies are required to adopt more environmentally friendly materials and technologies in their daily operations and reduce the amount of waste generated while reusing and recycling where possible. In addition, the Company conducts training for project company staff and encourages them to take part in environmental activities to raise the environmental awareness of staff, customers and business partners in order to disseminate the principles of low-carbon living.
